It’s interesting and fun to find out the meaning behind a name. It tends to hold particular importance during pregnancy, a birth, or in our case rebranding of a business. As co-founders the meaning of our business’s name was important for many reasons though primarily because we felt that whatever the name and meaning ended up being, it would be something very appropriate, relevant, and embodying of our business approach. Whether it’s building a family, business, or property project, being able to connect to the all-important ‘why’ that’s often found in the name and its meaning can be essential for navigating any inevitable twists and turns along the path!
Our business’ name holds our core purpose and resonates with us deeply. We also feel it adds meaning to our clients' projects, creating gorgeous spaces and homes that reflect their lifestyles, and places they absolutely love to come home to. Feeling connected to our name brings a sense of confirmation and contentment - and we just really love the name too!
Sharing our business name often elicits smiles, nods of recognition, and sometimes contemplative silence from those who enquire. It is the signature of our values, work ethic, and relationships with subcontractors, suppliers, clients, and staff. It represents the tone, quality, and integrity of our work.
So, what’s behind the name you ask, well, it's a tale that intertwines the diverse backgrounds and shared aspirations of its founders, Alexandr and Zofia. Picture this: two individuals in the same city (London) though from totally different professions to each other, different corners of the globe and linguistic heritages where somehow, they become constellated to embark on a joint venture. Together, they work and navigate the realm of construction with a mutual strong work ethic and unwavering commitment to shared purpose.
A name holds immense power to unite people, transcending cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic differences. It serves as a unifying force, bringing individuals together regardless of external or materialistic influences such as culture, wealth, background, education.
We chose our name from a series of 5 possibilities, and both landed independently on ‘Procoelum’. Though I had come up with all 5 names and they all held meaning, I never let on to Alexandr what they were; they were just words on a page. He picked Procoelum straight up without thought or hesitation, he said it was the one that just felt correct [to him]. Only afterwards did he ask its meaning, but that was not the reason why he chose it. They say we don’t ever pick the name it picks us. So, what picked us?
PROCOELUM
The name is derived from two Latin words: -
i) ‘Pro’ – to and towards
ii) ‘Coelum’ – Heaven
Procoelum – for and towards Heaven.
Heaven transcends boundaries, much like our homes, which serve as unified spaces for all. It embodies a way of life or living, working, and though we may not always embody it perfectly, its essence remains true to us. Home represents our own piece of heaven, unique to each individual yet universal in its joy.
It is our focus and our complete joy to work ‘to and towards Heaven’, and for you too.
Because - “This is what we do!”
